Handy numbers.
Body language is one of the aspects of any culture and it is an identifier in many cases. Remember the scene in 'Inglorious Bastards", when their undercover went downhill the moment the soldier ordered three beers and used hand gesture to show three? and it was very not- German way! so not-German that it got them killed!!!Well there are some body language specifics in China as well. Not that you will get killed if you don't use the right ones, but it will definitely make your life easier when you need to talk about prices, amounts and even days of the week and months! My Chinese friends boast about it a lot, because Chinese need to use only one hand to show numbers from 1 to 10. I must agree it's really convenient and I'm surprised Western cultures weren't smart enough to come up with it first:)In South China I see a different sign for number 7 ( it's like an 'L' letter upside down, using your thumb and index finger). As well for number 10 people sometimes use to cross their index fingers, so it looks like the actual Chinese character that stands for number 10.There are times that I can say that a foreigner has been in China long enough, because he or she uses the hand gestures for the numbers while talking. It's such a useful thing in every day life, especially in bargaining:) BUT most of all it makes you feel part of the culture, an insider of this complicated and yet so simple Chinese culture!!!
